The Expedition
The Juan Bautista de Anza colonizing expedition of 1775/1776 brought soldier settlers to augment the Presidio of Monterey and establish the Presidio de San Francisco and Mission San Francisco de Asís. These pobladores were recruited by Captain Juan Bautista de Anza from the poverty ridden alcaldias of Sinaloa, Alamos, Culiacan, El Fuerte, and were assembled at the Presidio of San Miguel de Horcasitas in the province of Sonora, New Spain.

Because of the gambling habits, the recruits were known to have, the government decided not to pay them in cash [the Anza letters tell us otherwise] but to provide them with all the necessities to make the trek, and farther grant them land after the usual ten year time frame of service to the king.

After many delays the expedition left the Presidio of San Miguel de Horcasitas on September 29, 1775 heading towards the northwest arriving in what is now Yuma, Arizona on November 15, 1775.
